Introduction to BSMI

BSMI is the English abbreviation of the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection of the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan, and its full name is Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection. It is responsible for formulating the requirements for products entering the Taiwan market and the implementation of related supervision. According to the announcement of the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan, from July 1, 2005, products entering the Taiwan area will be subject to electromagnetic compatibility and safety regulations. From January 1, 2018, additional products must comply with the restriction of hazardous substances. Directive (RoHS).


BSMI certified products mainly include:
Electrical products (such as home appliances), electronic products (such as information equipment and entertainment audio-visual equipment products), mechanical products (such as power tools), and chemical products (such as tires and toys).

Introduction to BSMI certification for wires and plugs
The BSMI certification of wires and plugs is a compulsory certification in Taiwan and requires testing at local institutions in Taiwan. The certificate is valid for three years and can be extended once (extension of 3 years). The first application for wires requires factory inspection, which will be conducted once a year after obtaining the certificate; the plug does not require factory inspection.

Common wire types of Taiwan wires:
a. PVC line: VSF; HVSF; VTF; HVTF; HVFF; VCTF; HVCTF; VCTFK; HVCTFK.
b. Rubber thread: NNFF; HHFF; PNCTF; PNCTFK.
c. Involved standards: CNS 3199; CNS546; CNS 670; CNS 687; CNS 689.

Common models of Taiwan plugs:
a. Plug polarity: two-pole general type, maximum rated parameters: AC 15A 125V

b. Plug polarity: two poles with grounding, maximum rated parameters: AC 15A 125V


Involved standards: CNS 690; CNS 15767-1.
Note: Wires and plugs must comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) requirements, and a RoHS report is required. Accept the RoHS report issued by the ISO17025 laboratory.


BSMI certification process:

a. Submit application materials
b. Submit test samples
c. Test schedule
d. Factory inspection (one day)
e. Report review, certificate issuance

BSMI certification cycle:

After receiving the samples, the Taiwan BSMI cooperative laboratory will arrange a test engineer, who will complete the test report within 6-8 weeks.
The engineer of the Taiwan BSMI cooperative laboratory submits the test report to the certification department of the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection of the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan for review and certification. The issuing department is expected to issue BSMI certificates within 1-2 weeks.
From testing to certification, the entire certification cycle takes 8-10 weeks.
