Electronic and electrical products | Introduction to Saudi SQM certification
In February 2020, the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Authority (SASO) issued an announcement adding extension cord assemblies (sockets), plugs and sockets, switches and converters to the scope of mandatory certification. According to Saudi Cabinet Decree No. 216 issued by Saudi SASO, products exported to the Saudi market and controlled by SQM regulations need to apply for the Saudi quality label SQM.

 1. What is SQM?

SQM is the Saudi Quality Mark, the Saudi quality mark. It is a conformity mark awarded by the Saudi Arabian Standards Organization SASO to certify that products comply with SASO standards and are produced in factories with effective management systems to ensure continued compliance. This certification is based on the ISO/IEC 17067 Type 5 certification system and is used for imported and locally manufactured products. The Saudi Quality Conformity Mark (SQM) can only be obtained if a product complies with the relevant SASO standard, regional or international standard, and is manufactured by an organization that implements an effective quality management system and ensures ongoing compliance.

2. The control products that are required to obtain the Saudi Quality Mark are as follows:
1. Gas appliances and their accessories (household cookers, ovens, grills, liquefied petroleum gas heaters, gas rubber hoses, etc.)
2. Building materials: metal components and their alloys for construction projects (steel plates, steel coils, structural steel, aluminum and aluminum alloys, etc.)
3. Building materials: hydraulic connectors and related products (cement, concrete blocks, gypsum boards, etc.)
4. Building material: ceramic tile
5. Biodegradable materials
6. Building materials: flat steel products (from June 22, 2020)
7. Building material: aluminum plate (from June 22, 2020)
8. Extension cords and power sockets (from August 2020)
9. PVC insulated cables (from August 2020)

3. Information required to apply for SQM certification:
1. Register an account online to submit an application;
2. Submit relevant documents; (technical documents such as product manuals, product labels, circuit diagrams, etc. in Arabic and English)
3. The company's quality management system documents (eg: ISO 9001 certification)
4. Declaration of Conformity;
5. Quality Manual;
6. Quality control plan;
7. Business license;
8. Organizational structure;

9. Factory location map;

4. Other supplementary matters:
1. On-site factory audit by Saudi Standards Organization officials, the certification cycle is 4-6 months:
2. The certificate is valid for 3 years, and a supervision and inspection is carried out every year;
3. If the product is within the scope of GCC, you need to apply for GCC certification first and then apply for SQM;
4. Importers or exporters can also apply for QMARK certification;
5. After getting the SQM and Gmark certificates, you need to go to the SABER system to apply for the PC certificate and SC customs clearance documents;
