The sweeping robot not only helps us get free from the tedious daily house cleaning, but also creates a clean and tidy environment and gives us a good mood. According to data from Zhongyikang, from 2009 to 2018, the sales volume of sweeping robots in the Chinese market increased from 570,000 units to 5.77 million units, and the sales increased from 800 million yuan to 8.66 billion yuan, both achieving a tenfold increase. Sweeping robots are gradually being favored by consumers, and they have become one of the most important home appliances products exported by manufacturers to the North American market recently.

On September 15, 2017, the tenth edition of UL 1017 "Vacuum cleaners, blowers and household floor cleaners" was officially released. This standard makes detailed safety assessment requirements for sweeping robots. At the same time, UL 2595 "General Requirements for Battery-Driven Appliances" is cited as the safety assessment standard for the battery and charging system of sweeping robots.

However, many manufacturers neglect some of the requirements in the standard when designing their products, which has a certain impact on the certification process. To this end, UL has sorted out the common important issues in the certification process of sweeping robots for reference:

Requirements for batteries and battery packs

• Lithium battery cells need to comply with UL 62133/CAN/CSA E62133;

• Ni-MH or Ni-Cr battery cells do not need to be separately certified;

• The battery pack does not need to have UL 2054 certification;

• The charger needs to comply with CSA C22.2 No. 107.1, CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 107.2, UL 1012, UL 1564, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 223, UL 1310, CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60950-1, UL 60950-1, CSA-C22.2 No. 62368-1, UL 62368-1, UL 60335-2-29 or CSA C22.2 No. 60335-2-29;

• Critical safety protection (Safety Critical Function, SCF) that cannot be achieved by hardware requires a separate software evaluation;

Lithium battery charging system test

Normal state charging test

A. Balance charging: Under normal circumstances, the lithium battery cannot be charged beyond the rated parameters of the battery cell;

B. Unbalanced charging: For series-connected battery packs, it is necessary to deliberately repeat the charging test with a battery with unbalanced power. Discharge one of the batteries to nearly 50% of the capacity, and fully discharge the rest to form a battery pack with unbalanced current for charging test;

 Abnormal state charging test

A. In the case of failure of a single component in the charging circuit, repeat the unbalanced charging test;

B. The unbalanced charging test of a single battery short-circuit, that is, charge all batteries to 50% of the capacity, short-circuit one of the batteries, and then charge the entire circuit;

C. Form the most unfavorable impact on the anti-reverse charging circuit by short-circuiting a component or PCB trace, and then charge the entire circuit;

Common critical safety protections (SCFs)

• Shutdown protection: when the user picks up the host, the dangerous moving parts that can be touched must stop within one second;

• Hanging protection: the product is required to be able to detect the edge of the step to prevent the product from falling;

• Obstacle protection: When the host encounters an obstacle, it should be able to stop or go around;

• Low voltage protection: The product should stop working or return to charging before the product’s power drops to the point where other SCFs fail;

UL can not only provide UL certification for sweeping robots, but also provide certification services for the global market, covering North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia, etc.; testing content includes safety certification, EMC/wireless, energy efficiency, performance, chemistry, packaging and transportation , And retailer testing business.

In addition to complete machine certification, it can also provide testing and certification services for core components such as motors, batteries, chargers, and laser modules.
