South American market for power cord plugs - Brazil and Argentina certification introduction
Date:2025/9/15 Clicks:11

INMETRO (Brazilian National Institute of Metrology, Standardization and Technology Industries) is a Brazilian government agency responsible for managing and promoting research in the metrology, standardization and technology industries in Brazil. The main responsibility of INMETRO is to ensure that products and services comply with quality and safety standards, protect consumer rights, and promote the development of domestic and international trade in Brazil through the implementation and supervision of technical specifications, measurement units, and standardization systems.

INMETRO certification refers to the evaluation and certification of products by INMETRO institutions to confirm compliance with Brazilian national and international standards. This certification is not only required by Brazilian laws and regulations, but also one of the legal requirements for entering the Brazilian market At present, there are multiple INMETRO certification bodies, such as TUV Rheinland, DEKRA, BV, and NCC.

When the entire product of the power cord plug is exported for INMETRO certification, only a valid CB certificate and report are required for the wiring.

The plug is divided into two plug and three plug, and the rated current of the plug is also distinguished according to the size of the wiring specifications, such as 2.5A, 10A, 12A, 16A, 20A, etc The wiring has also increased from 0.5 square meters to 2.5 square meters. Due to different rated currents, the pin sizes used in plugs also vary. Generally, the above application scope covers 4 certificates. There are also different certification bodies that issue separate certificates for different rated currents.

The testing standard for power cord plugs is:

ABNT NBR 14136, ABNT NBR NM 60884-1

The experimental projects involved include: marking, size inspection, anti electric shock protection, grounding measures, terminals and tips, aging resistance, insulation resistance and electrical strength, temperature rise, flexible cables and their connections, mechanical strength, heat resistance, etc

The procedure for INMETRO certification is: factory inspection - on-site sampling - type testing - certification audit and issuance
Certification period: 3 months
Certificate validity period: 6 years

Maintenance after certification: There are two factory audits per year, and sampling tests will be conducted. The overall cost may vary depending on the number of certificates issued.

INMETRO certification requires a local agent in Brazil. If domestic enterprises do not have local agents in Brazil, we can assist in providing this service. Our services also include product pre testing, factory review coaching, and more.

Introduction to IRAM Safety Mark

The IRAM Safety Mark is a mandatory certification mark in Argentina (excluding exempted products). Argentina implemented a security certification system through Resolution 92/98 in 1998.(Resolution 92/98) Implement a security certification system.

Starting from December 31, 2002, regulated products must be evaluated and certified by a qualification certification body recognized by the Argentina Accreditation Organization (OAA) before they can be legally circulated in the market. Manufacturers may affix Safety Mark markings on certified products to demonstrate compliance with relevant regulatory standards in Argentina.

Compulsory certification products (requiring S-Mark logo)

Low voltage equipment (rated voltage below AC 1000V or DC 1500V), household appliances, office equipment, audio and video products, plugs and sockets, etc.

There are multiple institutions that can issue IRAM certification for Argentine plugs, such as IRAM, Intertek Argentina, TUV Argentina, etc.

Argentine plugs and testing standards

Specification: Class I 250V/10A (IRAM 2073);

Class I 250V/20A (IRAM 2073)
Class II 250V/10A (IRAM 2063)

Test standards: IRAM 2063/IRAM 2073

IRAM certification process for plugs:

Submit application (laboratory confirmation of sample requirements)
Sample testing
Factory Review (CIG023 Factory Inspection Report)

Review and issue certificates

Certificate validity period: no validity period, annual review maintains validity (annual review once a year)

Note: IRAM local institutions issue certificates and accept VDE's annual factory review report.

When the plug is undergoing IRAM certification, VDE wiring can be used for wiring.
